Canberra is an important fitness centre in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), featuring a wide range of sports and popular outdoor activities. With some exceptional world-class sports facilities in Canberra, including the prestigious Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), in the Bruce district of Canberra, where many of Australia's premier athletes train for the Olympics and other sports, Canberra is also home to many exciting spectator sports, such as rugby, Australian rules football, soccer, cricket and tennis, often attracting large crowds of spectators.

Rugby Union is one of the Australian Capital Territory's premier winter sports and the Canberra Brumbies are the main rugby union team in Canberra. Regular rugby league games are played at Canberra's Bruce Stadium on Battye Street most Friday or Saturday evenings from March, watched by huge crowds of cheering spectators. When the Canberra Brumbies are playing rugby, this is one of the major sporting events in Canberra.

The Canberra Raiders rugby league team, known locally as the 'Green Machine', also play regular rugby league games at Bruce Stadium and have gained a loyal following throughout Canberra and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
