Canberra has a number of extremely historic vineyards, wineries and major breweries, close to the city of Canberra and throughout the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Many of the best wines in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) originate from Canberra's Murrumbateman wine village, and wines from this part of Canberra are popular throughout Australia. The nearby Ballandean Bungendore, Lyneham, Tuggeranong and Wallaroo regions are other important areas close to Canberra, producing some superb wines from numerous vineyards.

Wine tasting and basic wine appreciation courses are often available at vineyards and breweries in the Canberra area. Many of Canberra's wineries also provide simple lunches and alfresco snacks, where you can enjoy the sunny weather and picturesque surrounding vineyards. Winemaking in Canberra and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) began in the mid-19th century, when Canberra's earliest vineyards were planted, although many of Canberra's largest and most successful vineyards were planted in the 1970s. It was not until fairly recently, in the 1980s, that Australian wine began to be widely appreciated and highly regarded around the world, including award-winning wines produced from local Canberra vineyards.

Guided tours and self-guided tours are amongst the most popular ways to travel around the most popular wineries and vineyards in Canberra. Most of the vineyards nearby Canberra have truly spectacular views of the countryside, scenic picnic areas, barbecue facilities and several wineries even provide bed and breakfast accommodation. It is worth bearing in mind that some of the vineyards and wineries near to Canberra are closed to the general public from Monday to Tuesday.
